Product Description

2-Cyclohexylidene-2-o-tolylacetonitrile (Petalia®) is a sophisticated synthetic organic compound classified structurally as an aromatic nitrile containing a cycloalkylidene motif. Developed primarily by the fragrance house Givaudan, it belongs to a class of specialty aroma chemicals known as captives—proprietary molecules restricted for exclusive internal use by the developer's perfumers before expanding into wider commercial availability. The structural fusion of the bulky electron-dense cyclohexylidene ring with an ortho-tolyl backbone gives Petalia high structural stability and specific volatilization dynamics.

Purity: not less than 99%

Appearance: white powder solid

Organoleptic Profile

Petalia is highly prized for its diffusive and multi-layered olfactory properties. It serves as a building block for modern floral interpretations, engineered to replicate complex natural scents that cannot be efficiently extracted.

Primary Accord: Fresh Floral, Rosy, and Powdery.

Secondary Notes: Peony, Lily-of-the-valley (Muguet), and vibrant Neroli.

Sub-tones: Subtle fruity undertones, green nuance, and a clean, "ozonic" freshness.

Performance: It has high substantive properties on skin and textiles due to its low vapor pressure, which ensures a slow, controlled release profile.

Industrial and Commercial Applications

Fine Fragrances and Perfumery

Petalia's dominant commercial role is in the formulation of premium perfumes. As a middle note, it bridges volatile citrus top notes with heavier woody or musky base notes. It adds a luminous, naturalistic "petal-like" bloom to modern feminine and unisex fragrances. It is a signature component in prominent commercial perfumes, including Delina and Valaya (Parfums de Marly), and Fleur Narcotique (Ex Nihilo).

Functional Consumer Goods

Beyond fine fragrances, its stability under varying pH environments makes it a valuable additive for:

Personal care products (body washes, facial creams, and luxury lotions).

Fabric care applications (liquid detergents and fabric softeners), where it provides long-lasting freshness through washing and drying cycles.

Regulatory Status and Safety

Because it is widely used in formulations that come into direct contact with human skin, Petalia undergoes regular evaluations by fragrance safety bodies, such as the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM).

Handling and Storage

Industrial manufacturers handle the technical-grade chemical as a potential skin sensitizer. It should be stored in tightly sealed, light-resistant containers away from strong oxidizing agents and direct heat sources to prevent thermal degradation or polymerization.
